Superbowl XLIX Projection, Week 11, Final

New England over Arizona

Very little changed with the narrow Pittsburgh win over Tennessee last night, in fact, neither team changed rank by strength. Pittsburgh stole a little bit of Division winning chance from Baltimore, Cleveland, and Cincinnati, and Tennessee gave up a little to Indianapolis and Houston (and just a smidge to Jacksonville), but everyone's pretty much where they were yesterday.

Superbowl XLIX Projection, Week 11, Sunday

New England over Arizona

Oakland is finally officially eliminated, and New England takes over the AFC favorite spot. In the last two years, the first elimination came in week 12, with 2-9 Atlanta and 1-10 Kansas City earning the honors in 2013 and 2012.

In the NFC, the first team has reached a 99% certainty of a playoff spot, which of course is 9-1 Arizona. This is significantly later than 2012 when Houston managed it at 6-1 in week 7, and 2013, when Kansas City reached it by going 8-0 in week 8.

Earlier this week, when I saw Denver was only favored by 9.5 to 10.5 points over the Rams, I told a friend of mine that sounded like easy money, I should bet on Denver, but unfortunately there's no legal sports book nearby, nor do I "know a guy who knows a guy". The result of that game is why I don't gamble. As that game unfolded I kept waiting for the Rams collapse and for Peyton Manning to take control, but it never happened. I'm not giving up on the Rams just yet, even though their chances are pretty minuscule at this point. They do still have a game against the Raiders, so at least there's that.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 12

Alabama knocked off Mississippi State, and jumped over them in the rankings to #2. At #1 is undefeated Florida State. Alabama's win and the bye for Ole Miss brought them down to #8 and out of the top 4 this week.

I have nothing against Florida State, but I was really rooting for Miami to finish off their upset last night, leaving only one undefeated team, Marshall, who I have up to #9 now. Marshall's remaining games are against current #81 and #83 Western Kentucky and UAB, so their strength of schedule won't be terribly strong. And, my rankings are giving them way more credit than the playoff selection committee. I'll be rooting for them the rest of the way, partially to see if the committee would be so bold as to deny one of only 2 undefeated teams entry into a 4-team playoff.

Missouri continues to climb in the rankings, now up to #13 from #23 by beating #24 Texas A&M. Georgia is now right behind them at #14.  Missouri should be able to win their last 2 games to make the SEC title game, where I fully expect them to get stomped by Alabama. If they lose to Tennessee or Arkansas, they can't make the title game, if I understand my tiebreakers correctly, because Georgia is finished with SEC play at 6-2, and Missouri's 5-1 means a 1-1 finish would tie the teams, which would then be broken by Georgia's victory earlier this year.

Down at the bottom of the rankings, we have SMU, 0-9 and holding on strong to the last spot.

Superbowl XLIX Projection, Week 11, Thursday

Denver over Arizona

Miami and Buffalo didn't affect much last night, as you might expect from a 5-4 vs 4-5 divisional matchup. New England got a slight bump in its Division Title chances due to the teams now both being 5-5 instead of Buffalo being 6-4. But, it wasn't enough to let them catch Denver atop the AFC.

eBay Wins #145

Today's nickel spent on eBay bought me these vibrant yellow 1991 Fleer cards. None of them were Cardinals, though one gave me pause for half a moment, until I came back to the reality that these cards are 23 years old, and the Cardinals' Carlos Martinez was actually born in 1991.

1991 Fleer
#128 Carlos Martinez
#390 Don Carman
#503 Danny Darwin
#520 Eric Yelding
#687 Nick Esasky
I like sets with colored borders, such as this one and 1990 Donruss. I've also always appreciated Fleer's inclusion of the year on the front of the cards when I'm trying to figure out the year on the less obvious sets, like the similar looking Fleer Ultra sets of the mid-90s. If I had more of these, I'd probably be seeking to finish the whole set. But, out of the 720 base cards, I've got 55 unique cards now, along with a few Cardinals duplicates.

Superbowl XLIX Projection, Week 10, Final

Denver over Arizona

With 1.5 billion simulations, I finally got Oakland into the playoffs a few times, although not enough times for them to win a playoff game. Philadelphia couldn't overtake Arizona in the NFC since they are still a game behind, and the projection of Denver over Arizona stays the same.

Superbowl XLIX Projection, Week 10, Sunday

Denver over Arizona

I'm starting to think I introduced a bug in my projection software. It seems very odd that the 5 strongest teams are not the Conference favorites, and the 5th strongest AFC team (Denver) is actually the favorite, although by a slim margin over the 4th (New England). Denver must have an incredibly easier upcoming schedule, because by all accounts the slightly stronger New England team should win more often than them, and they're both currently 7-2, and New England already holds the tiebreaker between the two teams with last week's win.

Toward the bottom of the pile, you'll see Oakland didn't make the playoffs in any simulations this week. I knew that was likely to happen, so I tried to increase the chances of them hitting at least enough times to show a rounded 0.000 instead of a true absence of playoff chances. I ran a billion simulations. The Raiders are so bad, that in a billion (weighted) randomly generated universes, not one time did they make the playoffs.

A quick look at the divisional schedule makes it clear why they're so unlikely to make the playoffs. At least to be a division winner, Oakland would have to win their next 7 to go 7-9. Denver would need to lose all of their games to go 7-9. That would give KC a win over Denver, so they'd need to lose the rest to go 7-9. That would also give San Diego 2 wins (Denver and KC), so they'd have to lose all others to go 7-9. That would give Oakland the head to head tiebreaker, at 4-2 against the rest of the division, but not a single AFC West game can go the wrong way, otherwise they are out. I had a harder time crafting a wildcard scenario for Oakland, but by having every non-Oakland interconference game go the NFC's way, I show them with a tiny chance at a wildcard slot. I'm sure this will all be moot soon, once they lose another game, or the wrong combination of teams wins next week.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 11

Mississippi State retains the #1 ranking with a win, although Florida State is closing in on them, thanks to an increased strength of schedule. This week seemed to have a lot of top teams playing each other, and a lot of byes. Since the top 4 are really the important teams in this new College Football Playoff era, it's worth noting that Nebraska fell from #4 to #12 due to their bye. Ole Miss is now #4, leaping over Nebraska and Auburn, who lost to Texas A&M. #1-#3 remained the same.

Missouri, also on bye, dropped to #23 from #16.

At the bottom, Kent State lost, but somehow clawed their way out of last, to be replaced once again by SMU.

There's a potentially interesting scenario brewing for Marshall. Can an undefeated team be left out of the 4-team playoff, especially with only 1 or 2 other undefeated teams? Even though I have them all the way down at #13, I think they would have to be given a chance by the selection committee, even if it means leaving about a #4 seed they think would beat Marshall. It's different from selecting teams for a championship game directly, because in the event they really don't belong with the power conferences, they'll get blown out in the semifinal, and we'll still have a final of "deserving" teams. Of course, they were left completely off the top 25 of the latest available College Football Playoff rankings as of this writing which is week 10. That probably doesn't bode well for them, even if they have a 12-0 record and 3 strong victories to close out their season.

Superbowl XLIX Projection, Week 10, Thursday

New England over Arizona

We had another Thursday blowout, as Cleveland beat Cincinnati 24-3. Cleveland moved from the 17th strongest team to the 7th, while Cincinnati remained in position at 20th. How is this possible? Well, Cincinnati's strength did fall considerably, but as far as ranking goes, they went from just behind #19, to just ahead of #21, which happen to have a considerable spread between them. Now I just ask that you all forget that I ever had Cincinnati projected as the Superbowl winner.

eBay Wins #144

Today's cheap eBay lot is 1991 Donruss, the set that always confused me as a kid until I sorted my cards by number, and realized that the first half was blue-bordered, and the second half was green-bordered. I later learned was a series was.

I have no particular attachment to these three players, except in digital form. 2 out of 3 - Kevin Mitchell and Darryl Strawberry - are in R.B.I. Baseball, which is still one of my favorite baseball video games to play, followed by Triple Play '98 for Playstation. Like all of these lots, this one was a penny per card, bringing my rounded-to-three-decimal-places per-card average down another 0.001 cent.

Superbowl XLIX Projection, Week 9, Final

New England over Arizona

Indianapolis nearly took over the AFC lead with their victory Monday night. They're actually more likely to win the Superbowl than New England, and would be favored over them, but have just slightly less of a chance of winning the AFC, which is what I use to declare my projection each week.

I just noticed my "AFC=Red, NFC=Blue" color scheme is completely backwards with respect to team colors this week, though New England could be red too I guess.

Next week I may get to start chasing whether or not teams are truly eliminated when my hundreds of millions of simulations never show them making the playoffs even once. The Jets could lose and fall far enough to need a tiebreaker scenario to have any shot at their division, and Oakland could do the same against Denver. Jacksonville will be safe for another week, since Indianapolis only has 6 wins and a bye this week.

Superbowl XLIX Projection, Week 9, Sunday

New England over Arizona

Detroit had a bye and Denver lost, so both conference leaders changed. Denver happened to lose to a team that was already in a strong position, which helped New England take over the lead, since they would now own the head to head tiebreaker, which previously was projected to go to Denver. Arizona stayed 2 games ahead of Seattle as they both won, but St. Louis's improbable last-second fumble-touchback victory over San Francisco pulled the 49ers down to 3 games behind, seriously improving Arizona's division and overall playoff chances.

NCAA Football Power Rankings, Week 10

Mississippi State is #1 for the second week in a row and the third time in 4 weeks. My top two are in line with the AP poll and the CFB rankings, although those haven't been released for week 10 yet.

Missouri climbed from #19 to #16 more spots with a win over Kentucky, dropping them from #41 to #49. In a 4-round NCAA Football tournament, I'd have them on the bubble right now.

Kent State and SMU both took the week off, but they swapped positions due to their opponents outcomes this week.

Last week I had a very fair question posed about my methodology, because 6-2 Missouri were ranked ahead of 6-1 Georgia, despite a dominant 34-0 win by Georgia over Missouri. I had a few general ideas of why this could happen, including that in my system, it doesn't matter who you beat and who beats you, it only matter what your record and strength of schedule are. For example, going 1-1 against Oregon and Kent State will result in the same ranking regardless of which team was the win, and which was the loss. I'd like to point out that Georgia lost to a team Missouri beat (Florida) this week, and Missouri won, making it a 7-2 team above a 6-2 team. But I will also point out that that in no way justifies the ranking last week. These are not predictive rankings; they are supposed to be based entirely on past performance.

The short answer to Georgia's low rank can be summed up in 1 word: Troy. Georgia played Troy, and it annihilates their strength of schedule each week.

I only show the ranks for the FBS teams, but I actually keep a ranking all teams in any games shown on the scores pages on espn.com, which was 718 teams as of last week. That's every division 1, 2, and 3 team, as well as any lower division opponents they may play, such as NAIA teams like William Penn, who lost to South Dakota, but played no other NCAA opponents. Those one-off lower division teams cause me to have teams like William Penn listed at 0-1 in my rankings, and I have considered different ways of handling those. For now, they are simply treated as a team that has played only one "real" game. Circling back to Troy, with all 718 teams considered, they have been ranked #673 for the past 2 weeks. When calculating strength of schedule, 673 is the number that counts against Georgia, not the 125 it would be if I was only considering the FBS rankings. I don't have a way to quickly check which method would have penalized Georgia less, but I have a feeling 125 out of a possible 127 would still hit them pretty hard.

The method I use is fairly naive, and the penalty for each opponent is equal to their rank. So, playing the #2 team weakens your schedule twice as bad as playing the #1 team, but playing #101 is only 1% worse than playing #100. There are probably better curves to draw that would more accurately reflect the falloff in difficulty from #1 to #718, but it's hard to determine that dynamically in a closed system. The other half of the ranking equation is record, with a win worth 718, and a loss worth -718. I then add a factor for the difficulty of the team, which ranges from 717 for beating the #1 team, to 0 for beating the #718 team. For losses, a 717 points are added so that a loss to #1 is only a -1 on net, and losing to #718 costs you the full 718 points. If you shift some equations around, the simpler formula is that your score is 2*wins*N + sum(ranks of opponents), which is where the 6-1 vs 6-2 issue feels tricky, but really isn't.

I initially sort the teams by record - actually by wins then losses, so 2-6 is above 1-0, for example - then repeat this ranking procedure over and over until it stabilizes. Every time an opponent moves up or down, their opponents are affected, as are theirs, etc. Sometimes it stabilizes into a loop of 2 ranking sets, so I have to take an average of them, and that was the case this week and last, so these numbers aren't dead on. But, they give you a ballpark figure.

Last week, Georgia's score was:
4308 for a 6-1 record
-27 Clemson
-222 South Carolina
-673 Troy
-315 Tennessee
-476 Vanderbilt
-56 Missouri
-255 Arkansas
=2284

Missouri's was:
4308 for a 6-2 record
-144 South Dakota State
-169 Toledo
-137 UCF
-330 Indiana
-222 South Carolina
-63 Georgia
-308 Florida
-476 Vanderbilt
=2459

Overall, I think these rankings work pretty well. I may play around with the scoring system in the offseason, to see what sorts of changes would put me more in line with other computer rankings, if nothing else for my own curiosity. I certainly don't want to delve into the territory of choosing a system that favors my favorite team, but I'm always open to exploring the new possibilities.
