Red Cardboard's Mostly Reds Cardboard Draft, Part 3

(Part 1)
(Part 2)

I took a little break there, but I'm back and I've got to finish this prize package.

2015 Topps Gypsy Queen
#11 Hanley Ramirez
#38 Matt Kemp
#94 Evan Longoria
#179 James Shields
#286 Ken Giles
2012 Topps Gypsy Queen - Mini #283 Mike Leake
2015 Topps Gypsy Queen - Mini #288 Wilin Rosario
2013 Panini Cooperstown - Colgan's Chip Disks #161 George Wright
I've seen these disks before, but I still somehow thought that might have been a legitimately vintage card/disk. Also, how's this for timing: I got the Mike Leake card posted on the day he was sent off to Seattle. He played for the Cardinals for all of 2016 and, obviously, 2017 up to this point.

2013 Topps - Blue Border Parallel #161 Bronson Arroyo
2015 Panini Diamond Kings
#15 Billy Butler
#66 Jacoby Ellsbury
#99 Matt Shoemaker
#130 Thurman Munson
#192 Chris Bassitt
I've been a fan of Diamond Kings since the 80s, so it was a no-brainer to choose these cards in the draft. I especially enjoy the old photo of Thurman Munson. I also think his card also looks best because they didn't have to cover over nearly as many logos due to his backwards cap and chest protector.

Bowl Pick 'Em Contest Winnings, Part V

College football will be here again before we know it, so I've got to get my prize from last season's Bowl Pick 'Em contest at Cards on Cards posted! My prize for a second place tie was a very generously sized box of cards, so I felt a bit overwhelmed even sorting through them. I finally sorted them out by player, and, as usual, I'll plan to post them all eventually, but I might quit halfway through, we'll see.

Part I II III IV

2014 Bowman Chrome - Prospects #BCP42 Tim Cooney
2014 Topps Archives #178 Carlos Martinez
2015 Topps Gypsy Queen #72 Carlos Martinez
2015 Topps Opening Day #147 Carlos Martinez
2015 Topps Update
#US44 Tim Cooney
#US104 Steve Cishek
#US105 Brandon Moss
#US311 Carlos Martinez
#US348 Jonathan Broxton
Tim Cooney is one of the most anticipated pitching prospects for the Cardinals in awhile, but he's been on the minor league DL all year. Luckily we've still got Carlos Martinez, and a fair shot at a wildcard spot this year.

2015 Topps Update #US13 Tommy Pham
Ah, another lone horizontal card. Tommy Pham's a huge fan favorite. I just need people to stop making "Phamtastic" puns.

Bowl Pick 'Em Contest Winnings, Part I

College football will be here again before we know it, so I've got to get my prize from last season's Bowl Pick 'Em contest at Cards on Cards posted! My prize for a second place tie was a very generously sized box of cards, so I felt a bit overwhelmed even sorting through them. I finally sorted them out by player, and, as usual, I'll plan to post them all eventually, but I might quit halfway through, we'll see.

2013 Topps Update - Blue Parallel #US4 Matt Adams
2015 Gypsy Queen - Mini #197 Matt Adams
It's hard to believe this is Matt Adams's 5th season in the majors. He still seems like one of the new kids on the team.

1993 Pinnacle #599 Rene Arocha
1993 Topps Stadium Club #712 Rene Arocha
1994 Fleer - Rookie Sensations #1 Rene Arocha
1995 Fleer Ultra #221 Rene Arocha
I was too young to really be aware of it at the time, but Rene Arocha was apparently the first player to defect from the Cuban national team. There was a great article about it in the New York Times a few months ago, you can read here.

1996 Donruss #92 David Bell
1996 Leaf #70 David Bell
Both of these cards are from the same year, yet Donruss claims David Bell wore #25, while Leaf clearly shows 27. He first wore 25 when he came over from Cleveland near the trading deadline, and switched to 27 later that same year, about 2 full seasons before Mark McGwire arrived. Yet, now that he's the Cardinals hitting coach, he's wearing 25 again, because Jhonny Peralta has 27.

2015 Gypsy Queen #27 John Lackey
2015 Topps Opening Day #29 John Lackey
I started out just grabbing guys from the beginning of the alphabet (I'm always sorting), but to cram as many cards as possible in while still tagging each set, I'm doing my best to stick players together who both have cards in common sets, like John Lackey and Matt Adams, who both had a 2015 Gypsy Queen in the package.

Discounted 2015 Gypsy Queen Hanger Box #2

I enjoyed my first hanger box enough to go back for another, but that was the last one on the shelf, so I probably won't have any more after this one.

2015 Gypsy Queen
#57 Jason Vargas
#70 Adam LaRoche
#85 Jon Singleton
#88 Justin Upton
#109 David Cone
#120 Joe DiMaggio
#129 Drew Smyly
#133 Ernie Banks

2015 Gypsy Queen
#146 Matt Cain
#153 Wade Boggs
#160 Hyun-jin Ryu
#173 Jayson Werth
#246 Brian McCann
#284 Trevor Rosenthal
#287 Brian Dozier
#292 Aaron Sanchez
Only one of the base cards was a Cardinal, Trevor Rosenthal, but they're all duplicates anyway since I purchased the non-SP base set.

2015 Gypsy Queen
#321 Dave Parker(SP)
Glove Stories #GS-11 Norichika Aoki
I got an SP in this one, Dave Parker. I'll probably have to buy a full set of all 50 if I want to complete it, though.

2015 Gypsy Queen
Walk-Off Winners #GWO-24 Neil Walker
Mini #110 Justin Verlander
Mini #297 Homer Bailey
Mini Silver #51 Anthony Rendon #041/199
I got another numbered mini in this box, the Silver which is #/199, slightly less rare than the red I got last time, numbered to 50.

2015 Gypsy Queen - Framed Paper White
#70 Adam LaRoche
#95 Corey Kluber
#202 Juan Lagares
I got 3 new Framed Paper parallels, so I've only got 94 more to go now. Also, the hanger pack advertised that it contained 24 cards. If I counted correctly, I got a bonus card in this box, for a total of 25.

A Discounted 2015 Gypsy Queen Hanger Box

I found some hanger boxes of 2015 Gypsy Queen, a denomination I didn't know existed for that set, in the 40% bin at Walmart. Ozzie Smith's big smiling face and non-flapped helmet grabbed my attention, and I decided to spend $5.98 for the 24-card box. Here's what was inside.

2015 Gypsy Queen
#24 Joey Votto
#74 Julio Teheran
#103 Taijuan Walker
#131 Zack Wheeler
#193 CC Sabathia
#154 Ryan Howard
#162 Jonathan Lucroy
#163 Willie McCovey

2015 Gypsy Queen
#176 Yasiel Puig
#189 Daniel Norris
#238 Carlos Beltran
#248 Jose Quinana
#259 Mike Foltynewicz
#271 Lance Lynn
#281 Wade Davis
#290 Jay Bruce
I purchased a base set back in July, so these will all go in my duplicates list, hence why I only considered the box on clearance. But now, we get to the new stuff to my collection. I was hoping for a Short Print, but had no such luck.

2015 Gypsy Queen
Mini #122 Ken Griffey, Jr.
Mini #251 Ervin Santana
Mini Red #46 Adrian Beltre #19/50
Part of the reason I really like Gypsy Queen is the casual inclusion of hall of fame players. That Ken Griffey Jr. card is just a regular mini, so just as common to pull as a Steve Cishek.

2015 Gypsy Queen
Walk-Off Winners #GWO-9
Pillars of the Community #PC-RC Robinson Cano
If I had known this Ozzie Smith card existed, I'd have been chasing it since it came out. This is probably the most-played moment in Cardinal highlight reels, when he hit a homerun - already a rare and unexpected event for Ozzie - to win game 5 of the 1985 NLCS. The card doesn't mention it, but that was when Jack Buck's famous call of "Go Crazy, Folks" was made. I heard a story that may have been apocryphal, that he was slightly worried right after he said that, that there might be celebratory rioting in the streets and he'd be run out of town.

2015 Gypsy Queen - Framed Paper White
#7 Yordana Ventura
#43 Josh Hamilton
#79 Andre Dawson
As always, nice-looking parallels are my weakness, and now I want all the Framed Paper white cards. Just 97 more to go!

July Card Show Purchases III

[Part I II]

I really had no intention of stretching out a single set purchase to 3 posts, but then the Cardinals go and trade for a new player for me to collect, Steve Cishek. He's in 2015 Gypsy Queen, too, and they technically acquired him before my part II post...posted, though not before I scanned the cards and wrote it.

2015 Topps Gypsy Queen #283 Steve Cishek

Welcome aboard, Steve. I like that you pitch side-armed like me, but other than that fact, I have much to learn before I can pass my judgement on this move.

July Card Show Purchases II

Here's the other half of the Cardinals and other players I collect.

2015 Topps Gypsy Queen
#9 Bo Jackson
#25 Matt Carpenter
#27 John Lackey
#37 Mark McGwire
#44 Steve Carlton
#47 Ozzie Smith
That's a strong bottom row, with two Hall-of-Famers, and one that would have been, probably if he just handled the post-career PR a little better. Bo Jackson is one of the few players who never played for the Cardinals that I nevertheless collect, just because his story was so fascinating. I think the two-sport aspect gets me a little, too, because I considered adding Deion Sanders to my collections as well.

2015 Topps Gypsy Queen
#48 Shelby Miller
#49 Albert Pujols
#59 Adam Wainwright
#72 Carlos Martinez
#84 John Smoltz
#99 Roger Maris
This half netted me 6 uniformed Cardinals and 5 other Cardinals, for a total of 13 uniformed and 8 other. I wanted to say "former", but both Smoltz and Maris are pictured with teams they played on before St. Louis. I wasn't expecting a full 8% of the base set to fall into my personal collection, but here we are. Certainly that's somewhat due to the Cardinals recent success, and at the expense of other teams, so I will enjoy and appreciate this while the winning lasts.

July Card Show Purchases

In addition to my autographs, I did make one purchase at the card show; a full set of 2015 Gypsy Queen, without the SPs.  I have so many sets I haven't quite completed, that this one felt like a good idea when I saw it. I might still buy a few packs for a smattering of insert, and put the extra base cards in my trade list.

I decided to pull out all the Cardinals and players I collect to show, and as it turns out there were 24 of them, so I split them into two posts so I can tag them all. I tried a few different ways to sort them into two equal groups of 12, and couldn't quite get there, so I just sorted them numerically. Here's the second half first.

2015 Topps Gypsy Queen
#141 Nomar Garciaparra
#184 Michael Wacha
#197 Matt Adams
#228 Jhonny Peralta
#238 Carlos Beltran
#263 Mark Buehrle
I went with the second half of the cards first because today is Nomar's Birthday. He's 42 today, and I'm glad to see him showing up in current products. In addition to the 4 Cardinals, there's also my hometown compatriot Mark Buehrle.

2015 Topps Gypsy Queen
#265 Jason Heyward
#271 Lance Lynn
#273 Allen Craig
#274 Dan Haren
#284 Trevor Rosenthal
#299 Kolten Wong
Some local sportswriters have talked about the possibility of Dan Haren making his way back to the team by the trade deadline, although I don't know how likely that really is. All told from this half I got 7 uniformed and 3 former Cardinals.
