Bowl Pick 'Em Contest Winnings, Part XXXIX

College football will be here again before we know it IS HERE IS OVER, so I've got to get my prize from last season's Bowl Pick 'Em contest at Cards on Cards posted! My prize for a second place tie was a very generously sized box of cards, so I felt a bit overwhelmed even sorting through them. I finally sorted them out by player, and, as usual, I'll plan to post them all eventually, but I might quit halfway through, we'll see.

Part I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X
XI XII XIII XIV XV XVI XVII XVIII XIX XX
XXI XXII XXIII XXIV XXV XXVI XXVII XXVIII XXIX XXX
XXXI XXXII XXXIII XXXIV XXXV XXXVI XXXVII XXXVIII

And now for a few oddballs.

1987 Fleer - Stickers Baltimore/Atlanta with Cardinals backing (x2)
1988 Fleer - Stickers Chicago White Sox/St. Louis with Busch Stadium
1991 Studio #133 Joe Carter
1992 Score #433 Cal Ripken, Jr.
There were actually two of the 1987 Fleer Stickers, so I decided to scan the back of one. There was only one 1988, but it looks pretty much like 1987 with a green background on the front. On the back you see Busch Stadium, which is now often called Busch Stadium II since the Cardinals are now in their third stadium by that name.

The Carter and Ripken cards were more packing material. Those are two pretty big stars to be throwaway cards, but there's a slight crease in them, and the sets are pretty common ones to begin with. Carter also played for Baltimore, so I might pass these two along to a friend of mine for his kid, so he can try to indoctrinate him into his Orioles fandom.

eBay Wins #215

Today I've got the rest of my 1987 Fleer. People like to sell these cheap.

1987 Fleer
#524 Ed Olwine
#525 David Palmer
#526 Rafael Ramirez
#527 Billy Sample
#528 Ted Simmons
#529 Zane Smith
#530 Bruce Sutter
#531 Andres Thomas
#532 Ozzie Virgil
Ted Simmons and Bruce Sutter, both Braves here, played for the Cardinals. I wondered whether they were teammates in St. Louis, but Simmons left after 1980 while Sutter arrived in 1981.

1987 Fleer
#601 Bill Almon
#602 Rafael Belliard
#603 Mike Bielecki
#605 Bobby Bonilla
#606 Sid Bream
#607 Mike Brown
#608 Pat Clements
#609 Mike Diaz
#610 Cecilio Guante
Bobby Bonilla finished his career in St. Louis, though he's still getting paid by the Mets for something like the next 107 years.

1987 Fleer
#611 Barry Jones
#612 Bob Kipper
#613 Larry McWilliams
#614 Jim Morrison
#615 Joe Orsulak
#616 Junior Ortiz
#617 Tony Pena
#618 Johnny Ray
#619 Rick Reuschel
Tony Pena and Larry McWilliams were reunited in St. Louis for the 1988 season.

1987 Fleer
#620 R.J. Reynolds
#621 Rick Rhoden
#622 Don Robinson
#623 Bob Walk
#624 Jim Winn
#632 Bob Horner
Stickers
Boston Red Sox and LA Dodgers
LA Dodgers and Cleveland Indians (x2)
I had a Bob Horner in the previous eBay post, but this one commemorates one of the rarest feats in baseball he accomplished in 1986, hitting four home runs in a single game. The next player to do it was Mark Whiten in 1993, and the previous was Mike Schmidt in 1976. He's also one of only two players to do so in a loss for his team, at least according to the record books. The other was in 1896.

1987 Fleer
#649 Ralph Bryant / Jose Gonzalez
#653 Rob Nelson / Steve Fireovid
Stickers
Oakland A's (x2)
Oakland A's and Houston Astros (x2)
I could see these stickers being good for labeling your boxes or binders if you store your cards by team. I work by set, though, so I'll keep them intact for now. As with the last post, these came from my half-cent box, costing me 21 cents, knocking my average below 1.5 cents per card.

eBay Wins #214

Today I start to pay the piper for all the small eBay posts I made by splitting all my penny cards into lots by set. This isn't even all of the 87 Fleer I have to post, but there are too many Cardinals in the full stack to tag them all.

1987 Fleer
#153 Willie Hernandez
#165 Walt Terrell
#202 John Franco
#385 Joaquin Andujar
#386 Doug Bair
#387 Dusty Baker
#388 Bruce Bochte
#390 Chris Codiroli
#391 Mike Davis
As I said, there are Cardinals scattered through this post, even though the teams pictures are almost all A's and Dodgers. Joaquin Andujar is the first.

1987 Fleer
#392 Alfredo Griffin
#393 Moose Haas
#394 Donnie Hill
#395 Jay Howell
#396 Dave Kingman
#397 Carney Lansford
#398 David Leiper
#399 Bill Mooneyham
#400 Dwayne Murphy
Carney Lansford was a coach on Tony La Russa's staff in 1997 and 1998, so I sort of count him among Cardinals.

1987 Fleer
#401 Steve Ontiveros
#402 Tony Phillips
#403 Eric Plunk
#404 Jose Rijo
#405 Terry Steinbach
#406 Dave Stewart
#407 Mickey Tettleton
#408 Dave Von Ohlen
#409 Jerry Willard
Dave Von Ohlen started out with the Cardinals before moving to the A's.

1987 Fleer
#410 Curt Young
#436 Dave Anderson
#437 Greg Brock
#438 Enos Cabell
#439 Mariano Duncan
#440 Pedro Guerrero
#442 Rick Honeycutt
#443 Ken Howell
#444 Ken Landreaux
Pedro Guerrero is a Cardinal I actually remember, even though he only played 43 games in 1992, the first year I watched baseball. Rick Honeycutt had quite a long career, spanning 21 seasons with his last 2 in St. Louis.

1987 Fleer
#445 Bill Madlock
#446 Mike Marshall
#447 Len Matuszek
#448 Tom Niedenfuer
#449 Alejandro Pena
#450 Dennis Powell
#451 Jerry Reuss
#452 Bill Russell
#453 Steve Sax
Niedenfuer and Reuss are two more players to play for the Dodgers and Cardinals.

1987 Fleer
#454 Mike Scioscia
#455 Franklin Stubbs
#456 Alex Trevino
#458 Ed Vande Berg
#459 Bob Welch
#460 Reggie Williams
#491 Joe Cowley
#493 Bill Dawley
#494 Jose DeLeon
Not a Cardinal, but I enjoy cards of managers as players, like Mike Scioscia. Bill Dawley and Jose DeLeon, both White Sox here, were also Cardinals.

1987 Fleer
#501 Bob James
#504 Gene Nelson
#505 Dave Schmidt
#509 Jim Acker
#510 Doyle Alexander
#511 Paul Assenmacher
#512 Bruce Benedict
#513 Chris Chambliss
#514 Jeff Dedmon
No Cardinals players here, but Chris Chambliss was their hitting coach from 1993-95.

1987 Fleer
#515 Gene Garber
#516 Ken Griffey
#517 Terry Harper
#518 Bob Horner
#519 Glenn Hubbard
#520 Rick Mahler
#521 Omar Moreno
#522 Dale Murphy
#523 Ken Oberkfell
Finally, both Bob Horner and Ken Oberkfell played for the Cardinals.

I mostly post penny cards here, but I've purchased some lots for less than a penny each. In order to keep tabs on this (because why not), I put an appropriate number of them into a "half penny" box, so that in the end the total amount I spent is correct. So if I buy 11 cards for 10 cents, 2 go in the half cent box. Go ahead, work it out on paper, I know that sounds wrong at first. Now, I will swap cards in and out, keeping the right amount in the box, though I try to keep "junk" in the half-penny box, since more often those are the sets I wind up paying less for. In short, I count these 72 as costing me 36 cents.

eBay Wins #125

1987 Fleer, along with Fleer Update, looks much better with blue teams, like the Dodgers seen below. Seattle was blue too at this time, but you could hardly tell from the crazy lighting in Mike Kingery's photo.

1987 Fleer
#28 Don Baylor
#455 Franklin Stubbs
1987 Fleer Update
#U-57 Mike Kingery
#U-127 Frank Williams
There are no Cardinal players in this bunch, though Don Baylor was our hitting coach for awhile.

All-Star Winnings, Part 1

Way back in July 2012, I won a contest at Cards On Cards. The premise was to pick the Cardinals player who would have the biggest impact on the game, determined Sabermetrically. I picked the right player, and got a pile of Cardinals for my trouble. They've been sitting in that same pile, haunting me, for quite some time, so now is the time to show them to you.

1983 Topps Stickers
#135-136 Jim Kaat
#189-190 Dane Iorg
#283 Lonnie Smith
I was unaware of these Topps Stickers, but now I really wish I had known about them. Look at those sweet powder blues. There are plenty of Cardinals in the set, too, because there appears to be a World Series subset.

1982 Fleer #118 Tito Landrum
1985 Topps #113 Tom Herr
1984 Fleer #327 Jeff Lahti
1984 Fleer #660 Whitey Herzog (Checklist)
1986 O-Pee-Chee #94 Tom Herr
1986 O-Pee-Chee #171 Tito Landrum
More powder blues, Tito, Whitey, and O-Pee-Chee. This image pretty much sums up why we collect.

1987 Fleer #297 Ricky Horton
Wrapping up the older cards is current Cardinal broadcaster Ricky Horton, who goes by Rick these days. He's been doing that regularly for 10 years now, but he still feels new to me. Anyone but Jack Buck, Joe Buck, Al Hrabosky, and Mike Shannon probably always will.

A Contest Win from 30-Year Old Cardboard

I only recently found 30-Year Old Cardboard, when another blogger promoted the contest he was having for 500,000 hits! Obviously I was late to the game on this one, but I made it in time for the contest and won one of 10 prizes.

1987 Donruss #492 Barry Larkin

1987 Fleer #204 Barry Larkin

1987 Topps #648 Barry Larkin

For a long time, I didn't like Barry Larkin, because he took Ozzie Smith's spot at the 1993 All-Star game (at least in my 10-year-old and new-to-baseball mind). As I got older and learned that other teams can have good players, and even nice guys, too, I appreciated Mr. Larkin a lot more. So, winning these 3 Larkin rookies was really cool.

A big thanks to 30-Year Old Cardboard! Go follow his blog if you haven't yet, there's a ton of posts to read every month.
