Zistle Trade #31
With this trade post, I'm all caught up with Zistle, because I've been extremely inactive there for the last few months.
I liked the sparkly set that was 1997 Metal Universe, and bought several packs when it was new. Before this trade I only had one uniformed Cardinal, John Mabry, which came in a prize package. Now I've got 6 with the addition of these 5, leaving me Alan Benes, Andy Benes, and Dennis Eckersley to complete the team set. I also picked up 2 Todd Zeiles, one featuring his time with the Marlins, where he arrived with a much higher-profile star, Mike Piazza. Piazza of course was quickly sent to the Mets, and Zeile would go to the Rangers at the trade deadline, and the following season, rejoin Piazza on the Mets. I guess I never realized before they played together for both of those teams and Los Angeles.

eBay Wins #254
Today I continue my never-ending series of cheap eBay purchases with some 1990 Bowman. A bunch of these came in still-sealed packs, with chewing gum that not only soaked into the back card, but through it and onto a second card. None of them were huge stars, so I'll probably just toss the damaged ones.
I liked that for 1990 Bowman made the names more readable than 1989, though just barely. Lonnie Smith, Danny Jackson, and Gerald Young all played for the Cardinals.
Gregg Jefferies is the only Cardinal in this scan.
I also enjoy a set that's numbered by team, making it an easy choice how to sort it, and giving me a solid block of Cardinals with Ray Lankord, Vince Coleman, Paul Coleman, and Pedro Guerrero. Tom Herr and Jeff Parrett also played for St. Louis.
To finish off this post, a scan with no Cardinals, but a nice old Curt Schilling card.
I won't count the 10 gum-damanged cards in my count, but I also don't count their cost since I bought a big box for less than a penny per card. That puts me at a level 38 cents for 38 cards.

Bowl Pick 'Em Contest Winnings, Part XXXVII
College football will be here again before we know it IS HERE IS OVER, so I've got to get my prize from last season's Bowl Pick 'Em contest at Cards on Cards posted! My prize for a second place tie was a very generously sized box of cards, so I felt a bit overwhelmed even sorting through them. I finally sorted them out by player, and, as usual, I'll plan to post them all eventually, but I might quit halfway through, we'll see.

The giant prize pile is down to a large handful...
I always find it interesting to see what happpened with Cardinals draft picks I've never heard of.
Carl Dale was sent to Oakland as part of the deal acquire my cousin, Todd Stottlemyre, and eventually made it to MLB with Milwaukee in 1999 after rosters expanded. Yates Hall appears to have played his entire career in the Cardinals minor league system, and only played through 1998, when he was 25, but only rose to AA.
Brett Butler, I'm pretty sure, was another "packing material" card, protecting a stack by covering the end. But it's in good enough shape to throw into my 1991 Donruss box, along with the Ray Lankford. Also, I promise that hologram is of a 1990s Cardinals logo, though it's pretty hard to tell that from the scan.

Zistle Trade #26, Part II
[Part I]
This half of the trade has a lot more Ozzies.
I'm continuing to chip away at 1990 Donruss, and I'm down to error variations for the most part. This Rick Reuschel card is the corrected version. Donruss printed a bunch of the all star cards with All Star stats but with a header implying they were regular stats, and the corrected versions say All-Star stats. It's a subtle and mostly meaningless difference, but I figure, the cards aren't rare, so why not track them all down? Mike Aldrete's card is another error card, which says he's #25 on the back. As you can see from the photo, he was #24. Mike was the assistant hitting coach and then bench coach for the Cardinals a few years ago, so I've decided to collect his cards even though he never played for St. Louis.
The big cards from this trade are at the top of that scan, though, a nice 1982 Ozzie Smith, and 3 1983 Topps Cardinals. I collected every Ozzie Topps flagship base card many years ago, but it's good to start filling in the other brands.
Also, I was sure I've posted a Paul Coleman card before, but I don't have any post tagged with his name. He might be one of the Cardinals worst draft decisions. They chose him one pick ahead of Frank Thomas, yet he never made it to the majors.
I really like these 1993 Leaf cards, so I'm not sure why I didn't have them yet. Now, I do. I was also glad to get a one of the modern Ozzie inserts, the 1972-style mini from 2013 Topps.

Turkey For Me, Turkey For You II: Electric Boogaloo
There are no turkeys today, but these came in the package with the Turkey Red cards, so I'm completely justified in ripping off the greatest sequel subtitle of all time.
Part I
I still sometimes think I must have dreamed the game where Ankiel threw 5 wild pitches - and another that would have been called, but the catcher saved it - in an inning, but then I go look it up on YouTube, and sure enough, it happened. Then he came back and hit home runs for a while. What an odd career path for a modern player.
That's a nice shiny Wacha Refractor. It looks so nice I was ready to go buy some 2013 Chrome, until I realized it wasn't a base card. Still, I may do so, just for the few refractors I'll get.
Steve Montgomery raises an interesting question for my collection, and my blog. He was drafted by the Cardinals, thus his image above wearing the STL cap. However, he stayed in the minor leagues until he was traded to Oakland for Dennis Eckersley. So, do I officially collect his cards? That would mean I would tag him in my blog posts. And if I do, do I also consider Coco Crisp a Cardinal? Since he's actually wearing the hat on this card, I think he gets a tag, as would any future card of his I get. By extension of that logic, Coco Crisp will also, from now on.

Donuts from Johnny's Trading Spot, Part II
Several weeks ago, I read a post at Johnny's Trading Spot titled Instant mini collections up for grabs. "Up for Grabs" always gets my attention, so I threw my name into the mix. They were supposed to be randomly assigned, but through a lucky draw and one trade, each of the winners wound up with exactly what they originally wanted most. For me, that was cards with batting donuts.
Part I
I don't have much time to write much today, so just enjoy these donuts, along with an inordinately large number of Dan Walters cards.

I've got more to scan and post. I like to sort things logically, so I split them up by year. These are the latest cards from the package, and I've got about another 20 years backwards to cover.
In a lot of the photos, I wouldn't have even noticed the donut right away. Luckily the ones featuring a donut only on the back side were flipped appropriately when they arrived.

All-Star Winnings, Part 3
Way back in July 2012, I won a contest at Cards On Cards. The premise was to pick the Cardinals player who would have the biggest impact on the game, determined Sabermetrically. I picked the right player, and got a pile of Cardinals for my trouble. They've been sitting in that same pile, haunting me, for quite some time, so now is the time to show them to you.
Part [ I | II ]
Today, it's wall-to-wall Ray Lankford, with a touch of Mark McGwire.
Since I sort my cards by set, here are two McGwires from two of the sets represented in the Lankford scans above. It's not often you see a running shot of Mark McGwire. Usually it's exactly how that Ovation card looks, the follow-through of the bat, implying a home run swing, or him standing at the ready on defense at first base.

182 Packs Giveaway, Part II
When I claimed the Cardinals - and Mark McGwire and Todd Stottlemyre - in the pack-per-day giveaway held at TribeCards, I had no idea just how many cards I'd wind up with, and how many different players. So that I can tag all of the sets and Cardinal players, I've broken this up into a series of who knows how many posts. Thanks for all the cards, David.
[Part I]
Fleer Ultra is one of the sets for which I'd like to complete the full run (1991-2007), someday, but man, is 1994 the ugliest of the bunch or what?
Horizontal cards just mess up all my scanning plans.
Here's a good bunch from New Pinnacle, which is a weird name for a set when there was also a 1997 Pinnacle. Claiming Mark McGwire specifically also paid off here, since he's pictured on the A's. Card companies don't do many real subsets anymore, which made it take me awhile to track down that the "Aura" card was really just a base card.
To finish off these sets, here's a nice action shot of current Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. It's hard to believe he'd be managing the team just 7 years later.

My Second Jaybarkerfan PWE
As I mentioned before, Jaybarkerfan of Jaybarkerfan's Junk has been dropping PWE bombs on anyone who gave him their address and a favorite team. I just got another one, with more great Cardinals.
I'm not 100% sure, but based on the Kansas City Life Insurance Company logo on the back and the weird size, I think this is from a set given away free to kids at a Cardinals game. I have some similar sets with the same sponsor from 1993-1996 or so.
I love this 1993 Hostess set, so I'm happy to get this card even though I already had it. I can always find good reasons for spare Cardinals.
Checklists should always have players on them. That is all.
I just posted my first Matt Carpenter card, and now here's my second.
This card showed up in the first PWE too. All the easier to trade with my fellow Cardinals fans.
Of course, any package with an Ozzie is a great one to me, even if the rest were Bip Roberts and Mario Mendoza. This card was tricky to figure out since I don't have a lot of the 2008 Baseball Heroes set. At first I thought it was a Black parallel, but those are numbered to 250. It turns out, it's a Charcoal.

Zistle Trade #2
I got this trade proposal within a day or two of my last Zistle trade. They seemed to come out of nowhere, although I had added a lot of cards to both my have list and want list in the preceding weeks. I didn't recognize the name, so I don't think this person is a blogger, but if you are, and you sent me these cards, please let me know.
The pride of Evansville, Indiana, Andy Benes. He was born there and went to college there, something I learned when browsing college brochures back in high school. I wonder if they know he's on a SLU Billboard in town.
Ray Lankford should have been even more of a fan favorite than he was. After all, he refused to sign with the Cubs the first time he was drafted, and signed with us the following year. And we love giving the Cubs a hard time.
I'm surprised there were 3 Ozzie commons I didn't have, but here they are. Pacific is a little more believable, but surely I would have had an opportunity to pick up the Fleer and Score cards sometime in the past.

And we finish with one of my favorite non-Cardinals, Nomar Garciaparra.
This wasn't a big trade, neither in number of cards nor total "book value", but it fell right in the wheelhouse of my collecting habits. Those are the most satisfying trades. Now I just need to finish entering all of my collection in Zistle, and of course, add more cards to my want list.

Baseball Cards from Bo, Part I
Bo from Baseball Cards Come to Life contacted me about a trade, and he even did all the work picking cards from both my wantlist and tradelist to set up the swap. Here's the first part of my haul.
So a funny thing happened, I negotiated this trade while madding was putting together a prize package he obviously pulled mostly from my wantlist, so you may have just seen some of these cards.
Bo knocked out 10 of the 28 I still need for the K-mart set. It's a little cheesey, but I like it. This set sort of borders on oddball, but it does have the familiar little Topps logo there. Of course it doesn't hurt that the set is entirely stars.
Sometimes I browse Zistle.com for random Cardinal players, and tick the wantlist icon on any of their cards I don't have. I'm sure that's the reason this Suppan showed up on my list. I never even knew he was a Diamondback.
That's all for this round; I'm out of tag space!

[Part V]
I "won" a prize, in that I managed to have the worst bracket of all in Cards on Cards March Radness contest. I legitimately tried to win, in fact I didn't even realize there was this consolation prize until the contest was over, because I stopped scoreboard watching about 2 rounds into the tournament because I did so poorly to start off. The good thing about winning cards from a fellow Cardinals fan is that he can't resist dumping a whole bunch of his Cardinal duplicates on me, which I'm more than happy to take.
We're up to part 6 for you non-Romans out there.
There is a good mix of relative unknowns - i.e., Frank DiPino and Howard Hilton - and big stars in this group. Notice Todd Zeile has a catcher's mitt there; this was before his move to 3B due to his hitting and speed.
Here are 3 more 1990 Donruss towards my set. I love those late 80s Cardinals uniforms.
There's just one more part to this win, which will be revealed tomorrow night.

My Autographed Balls
It's time for the next question from Fuji's contest: Do you have autographed balls in your collection? If so, do you have a favorite? Why is it special?
Oddly enough, I actually mentioned in My Favorite Childhood Player that I didn't have an autographed ball of Mark McGwire. However, I do have a few Hall of Famers, and a few not so famous Cardinals as well. Here's the entire collection in one glamour shot.
Left to right, here's what we've got:

Left to right, here's what we've got:
- Lou Brock, which I acquired in person at a store opening, a Sears I think.
- Ozzie Smith. I've gotten autographs from him on a few occasions, but I think this was at an event at his restaurant.
- Gary Gaetti on the sweet spot, because he's the first guy I got to at the Cardinals Winter Warm Up. I only brought one or two balls with me that day, so also on the ball are Ron Gant, David Bell, Ray Lankford, Royce Clayton, and Scarborough Green.
- Kyle McClellan, who was signing for free at a local college open house last fall. He was really nice, even to the people who handed him 4 balls to sign (a bit much I think), and happily signed with the blue pen I provided.
- Bob Gibson, also from a Cardinals Winter Warm Up.
- And on top, not quite a ball, but close enough, is a T.J. Oshie puck. I think this technically belongs to my wife as her sister got it for her. Even so, it sits with the rest of my collection.
Other than the Oshie Puck, I actually acquired each of these in person. I don't think I'd be opposed to buying an autographed ball of a player I really liked, but it's also cool to have the memory of meeting the players, even if some of the memories are a bit fuzzy now. I haven't been to the Winter Warm Up since my return to collecting, but writing this post makes me really want an Oquendo, McGwire, Matheny, and La Russa ball now. Some other favorites of mine have moved on to new teams, but maybe after their retirement I'll be able to find Scott Rolen or even Albert Pujols at a local event.

A Prize For My Prescience, part 2
[Part 1]
Ryan at The Great Orioles Autograph Project sent me a whole bunch of cards for picking the Cardinals to win the World Series, and it is of course my duty to show you the cards and link to his blog.
First up in this post, more set completion, with 1990 Donruss. Here are the highlights, defined by me as my favorites and any past Cardinals.
In 1990 I bet a fair number of people thought Bo would go on to make the MLB and NFL Halls of Fame. It's a shame what injuries did to him.
The late-in-his-career Cardinal and rest-of-his-life Mets employee himself.
He's a hall of famer, of course he's getting scanned.
I actually didn't realize Harold Reynolds was a player until a few years ago I came across a card with a good closeup of his face and made the connection to the broadcaster, then of course looked it up on Wikipedia.
Anyone else remember the fans-dressed-as-Coneheads phenomenon? I wonder if this guy would have been as big a deal if he played anywhere other that the biggest media market.
Another brief end-of-career Cardinal.
Ditto.
Once again, I cannot escape Norm Charlton.
Example 1
Example 2
I wonder how many other Hall of Famers in any sport spent significant playing time in a different sport. It can't be many, Deion was truly an amazing athlete.
Jeff Brantley was always a good signer in Saint Louis during and even after his baseball career. I regret not going a little more out of my way to get an autograph when I had chances
Here's the full 1990 Donruss list I got:
10 Brian Downing (Diamond King)
12 Kelly Gruber (Diamond King)
60 Chet Lemon
64 Allan Anderson

Can I squeeze in a few more Ozzies?
It's cool to see a team card like this with multiple players, but few enough to name them all and have the faces visible. Really takes me back to the early 90s teams. Even though we weren't very good, I have a lot of good memories from those years.
I like the minimalist front of this set. From what I can tell it's a standalone put out by Score and not an insert set, but if anyone knows any different please let me know.
I've used up all the cards I've scanned so far, so look for part 3 whenever I get some more time to waste. I'm hoping for tomorrow, but who knows!
