Zistle Trade #29, Part I
Will I post all my Zistle trades before they shut down? Maybe!
This trade had a bunch of Cardinals, along with the Ripken All-Star card, one of the very few from 1990 Donruss I didn't have yet. I also knocked another Stottlemyre off my list, Mel, Jr., son of Mel and brother of Todd. And there were just enough players in this trade I had to split this one into two posts.

Zistle Trade #26, Part II
[Part I]
This half of the trade has a lot more Ozzies.
I'm continuing to chip away at 1990 Donruss, and I'm down to error variations for the most part. This Rick Reuschel card is the corrected version. Donruss printed a bunch of the all star cards with All Star stats but with a header implying they were regular stats, and the corrected versions say All-Star stats. It's a subtle and mostly meaningless difference, but I figure, the cards aren't rare, so why not track them all down? Mike Aldrete's card is another error card, which says he's #25 on the back. As you can see from the photo, he was #24. Mike was the assistant hitting coach and then bench coach for the Cardinals a few years ago, so I've decided to collect his cards even though he never played for St. Louis.
The big cards from this trade are at the top of that scan, though, a nice 1982 Ozzie Smith, and 3 1983 Topps Cardinals. I collected every Ozzie Topps flagship base card many years ago, but it's good to start filling in the other brands.
Also, I was sure I've posted a Paul Coleman card before, but I don't have any post tagged with his name. He might be one of the Cardinals worst draft decisions. They chose him one pick ahead of Frank Thomas, yet he never made it to the majors.
I really like these 1993 Leaf cards, so I'm not sure why I didn't have them yet. Now, I do. I was also glad to get a one of the modern Ozzie inserts, the 1972-style mini from 2013 Topps.
This half of the trade has a lot more Ozzies.

Zistle Trade #24
I made another smallish trade on Zistle, for some needs from the overproduction era. A few are base cards, but 6 of the 9 are either from traded sets or inserts, so they're a little harder to track down.
I've long been working on the 1990 Donruss set, and Ryne Sandberg was one of the two Bonus MVPs I didn't have yet. I've got the other on the way in another trade, too, so that insert set is nearly complete along with the base set, which I think is almost complete except for some errors and variations. I have a lot of 1989 Donruss base cards, but not many bonus MVPs, so the Ripken is a good get for me. The two Todd Stottlemyre cards are just because I collect Todd Stottlemyre, much like the Ozzie, Todd Zeile, and Jose Canseco cards. I put the Team USA cards from 1991 Topps Traded on my list after getting a few of them in the past and liking them, and finally there's a 1993 Topps Gold, also of Ryne Sandberg. I've still got over 780 of those to go to complete that set.

Zistle Trade #19
With today's trade I've filled in 7 more Cardinals cards in my collection, even though only one is actually pictured in uniform. I think I added the Fleer cards to my want list recently, possibly when I got the last of the uniformed Cardinals I needed in another trade. I should really just put the full sets from junk wax years on my list to make things easier, and pick and choose from the more rare sets.

Junior Junkie's Generosity, Part I
Back in March, Junior Junkie sent out packages to over 60 bloggers, and I was one of them. I'm notoriously slow to want to sit down and sort out large packages for posting, so here's a very late thanks. Also, I'm notoriously insistent upon posting every card I get in a trade or prize package, including tagging the set and players among those I collect, so strap in, you're in for at least a week of posts.
First up is the first half of the Bo Jackson cards. Which wasn't even the largest stack.
Somehow, I was relatively unaware of the Grand Slammers inserts from 1990 Donruss. A quick internet search told me they were in the factory sets and cello packs. As 1990 Donruss has been a longtime project of mine, including all the error variations, I'll probably be adding those to my want list.
I was kind of stunned to see Bo got 4 cards in 1991 Score's base set, until I looked it up and saw he actually had 5. He only had 2 cards total in 1991 Fleer, and I got both of those.
Why'd I throw in a random Lonnie Smith sticker to this bunch?
Apparently in 1990 Topps Stickers, there were stickers on one side, and the backs had a different player. Thus, this card is doubly collectible for me, with Bo Jackson one one side and former Cardinal Lonnie Smith on the other.

Tis The Season Winnings, Part IV
Sometimes, I procrastinate posting and sorting some cards. Normally I don't pay too much attention to how long a particular item has been sitting on my desk, but given that this one was the Tis the Season contest from 2013, I've probably had it in my possession for a little over a year now. But, even with the long delay, I still want to throw Jeff at 2 by 3 Heroes some referral traffic while I show off my prize.
Part I II III
Today I've got some more of the miscellaneous Cardinals, Red Sox, and Yankees from the prize package.
The Topps Glossy All Stars are definitely cards I should have in my collection, so this Ozzie along with yesterday's Vince Coleman were good additions. Guys like Phil Plantier are the reason I always look up players before assuming they weren't Cardinals. He apparently played for the Cardinals in the second half of 1997, coming over in the trade for Fernando Valenzuela. He played in the outfield in 32 games, and yet I had no memory of him.
Not only did I get two different Tom Brunansky cards, but as Red Sox and Yankees go, Clemens and Mattingly are two all time greats. A few years ago, I figured Mattingly would continue climbing up the Hall of Fame balloting and eventually make it in, but he's finally officially off the ballot. I suspect Clemens will eventually make it, once the fervor over PEDs dies down a bit, which may already be starting to happen now that Andy Pettitte is getting his number retired with the Yankees.

Zistle Trade #10
This was my first trade with a repeat partner on Zistle, BucCollector. Much like last time, these cards just cost me some Pirate duplicates.
I copied the exact description for each card directly from Zistle, since these were all error or variation cards from 1990 Donruss, and I'm not sure I could explain them any more concisely. I'm now about 35 total cards from finishing the full base set with errors, and with the Nolan Ryan and Checklist card, I believe I now have at least one variation of each card in the set.
How is it possible I've never posted a George Hendrick card before today? He even coached for the Cardinals for awhile. Bo Jackson is one of the few non-Cardinals I like to collect, so that's why his 1989 Fleer card was on my want list. At some point I decided I'd like to at least get the Team USA cards from 1991 Topps Traded, so that's why Jeffrey Hammonds was part of this trade. Pagnozzi and Coleman are obviously Cardinals here, and Mark Whiten joined the team a year after this card. I've still got 14 more current/former/future Cardinals to track down from 1992 Studio, though.
As with all trades, I'm just happy to knock 10 more cards off my gigantic want list, and be rid of some duplicates in the process.

Today I've got the 1990 Donruss and Score cards from my giant pile of eBay penny cards. It's nothing against Dion James, but I didn't really want to feature him in his own post next time.
I have an attachment to 1990 Donruss, because it was the first set I realistically thought I could complete by buying packs, when I bought a dirt cheap box from either my LCS or a Flea Market, I forget which, around 1994. I know some people think it's ugly, but I like it for sentimental reasons, not aesthetic. Somehow, even with that box and all the collecting I've done through the years, I'm still a little short of the full set. One day I'll go on a COMC or similar spending spree of a buck or two, and it will be mine.

Today I've got cards from 2 of Donruss's more garish 90s sets, which look even worse next to each other. But, these are the cards I grew up with, so they make me happy. It also doesn't hurt that they only cost me a penny each.
That makes 3 Danny Jackson cards in my last 10 eBay posts. That stat sounded like much more of an outlier before I typed it. Nonetheless, he counts as a Cardinal in my book, due to his 2 and a half seasons in St. Louis, so the lot netted 4 Cardinals out of 9 cards.

eBay Wins #98
This time, I picked up 2 rookie cards for their minimum bid of 1 cent each. I wonder what these would have cost me in 1991. Maybe up to a buck, or more in LA or Houston.
Here we've got 2 promising young rookies, from a time when your rookie card typically came out the year after your first season of play. Eric Anthony made the Astros for 25 games in 1989, and Dave Hansen played 5 for the Dodgers in 1990. I also picked up the Topps version of the Eric Anthony rookie, a "Future Stars" card, last year.
Since both of these were rookies, I decided to have a look at baseball-reference.com to see how their careers compared. I was a little surprised, especially since my firsthand baseball knowledge goes back to 1992 when I discovered I really liked the game.
Eric Anthony played 9 years, all the way through 1997, for Houston, Seattle, Cincinnati, Colorado, and the Dodgers, but only 682 games, 282 of which came in 1992-1993 as a starter. I feel like I vaguely remember him being around, which is about right considering his role on his teams later in his career.
Dave Hansen, I was certain, must have flamed out after a year or two. His name didn't ring a bell at all. But, he played 1230 games in 15 seasons, missing 1998 but playing from 1990 to 2005. Either the unbalanced schedule kept me from being exposed to the Dodgers and Padres much more than I thought, or my memory of the full league isn't as good as I thought. He also played 90 games for the Cubs in 1997 at a time when teams play 10% of their games against each division rival, which should mean he faced the Cardinals more than a few times. Memory is a funny thing.

All the errors, the injury, and the overturned call at second base (to the right call) so early in game 1 felt a little strange...almost Doug Strange.
Remember, once Doug left the Tigers after 1989, they were all Dougless. That joke doesn't work nearly as well in writing.

After spending 3 weeks showing off a single prize, I'm back to my eBay penny card posts with some 1990 Donruss.
While I know it's popular to bash this set, I still like it, though not necessarily from an aesthetic standpoint. I'm still dangerously close to finishing it, which probably causes me some bias. I'm pretty sure I'm only missing checklist #700, Will Clark #707, and one of the confusing Nolan Ryan cards, most likely #659. That would give me 1 of each numbered card in the set. There are many error cards in the set, though, so it'd also be nice to get one of every variation as well, which puts my want list around 39 cards for now.

College Bowl Game Contest Win, Part 17
For the 2012-2013 College Football season, I entered the College Football Pick 'Em contest hosted by madding of Cards on Cards. I've won several of his contests over the years, and he always dumps a ton of Cardinals on me when I do. Yet, I think this time he may have outdone himself. I may have to work hard to get them all posted before the 2013-14 College Football season starts August 29, and I start posting my Power Rankings again.

By now you've probably heard about Jack Clark's recent troubles caused by his big mouth, when he said he knew for sure that Albert Pujols has been juicing for years. Those are big allegations that require at least a little bit of evidence before you go mentioning them on the air. To give a local perspective, his co-host is notorious for being a sports shock-jock, and fired from nearly every station in town that ever employed a sports talk guy. I can't stand him, and I'm always glad to hear him go, so I don't stumble across his show when radio-surfing. Jack Clark has now retained one of the biggest names in high-priced attorneys in St. Louis, Chet Pleban. It's not clear to me whether this is to sue his (former) employer, or defend himself against the lawsuit Pujols has publicly threatened.
I knew Jack Clark has a bit of a reputation as a hothead, but I guess since St. Louis media don't usually hammer their hometown guys too hard, I never really knew his whole story. Apparently he's had trouble with Hall of Famers ranging from his Managers Frank Robinson and Lou Piniella, his teammates Ozzie Smith and Tony Gwynn, and now likely Hall of Famer Albert Pujols. As a side note, can we get Lou Piniella in the Hall of Fame as a manager please? Clark's apparently just got an attitude problem, and has for years.
I don't like negative posts, so let's end this one with Tony Pena making John Olerud feel silly.
...and then another guy named Brian Johnson.
Stay on your toes out there; it's the only way to save yourself from trick plays.

5 Cards for a nickel. Did you know that in the old days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them?
I still consider Ken Caminiti to be a star card, though, his legacy certainly suffered with his decline, substance abuse, and untimely death.
Dan Wilson was once a part of my grand plan to get an All-Wilson team in my fantasy baseball league. Unfortunately there were only about 5 active Wilsons at the time, and I think 2 were catchers. I do remember that Jack Wilson was solid that year, though.

Ah, 1990. In the fall, I started 3rd grade, and still had no interest in - or knowledge of - baseball or baseball cards. Yet, 1990 is one of the biggest years by quantity in my collection, since they've been cheap and plentiful from the time I started collecting in 1992 all the way until now. Here are 40 more for 40 cents.
There were 2 uniformed Cardinals out of the 26, which I guess is twice the expected value of a random assortment in 1990, when there were 26 teams. I'll call that a win.
I'm a Diamond King fan, and Rob Dibble's still around baseball, so those are good ones.
I was a bit of a bandwagoner as a kid, so when the Phillies were back to back champions I took an interest in them, making that Darren Daulton card stand out to me. [Edit: The Blue Jays beat the Phillies in 1993, but the Braves in 1992. Thanks to Mark for pointing that out.]
It felt like Joey Cora would be such a huge star at one point, but he seemed to level off. Now, he needs to run far away from Ozzie Guillen if he wants another MLB coaching gig.
Psycho! I like cards of guys with other ties to the game, whether it's coaching or broadcasting, so maybe I should start a side collection. That would cover a big percentage of players though. Also in this bunch, Larry McWilliams is a former Cardinal too, but a group of 24 cards scans much more nicely than 23.
Alright, enough with the red borders, let's see what's next.
This is Delino in his pre-Cardinal days. Also, I associate Terry Pendleton so strongly with the Atlanta Braves that it always seems weird to see footage or cards of him as a Cardinal.
2 All-Stars isn't bad.
As a guy who had normally kept a shaved head (except for a brief time in college), I appreciate Jay Buhner. Also, there's this:
Of course, Frank shortchanged Jay here. He had 40 HR in 1995, the "last year" to which he was referring in this clip.
On a statistical note, I shattered the 1.8 cents/card mark with this purchase, coming down from 1.802 to 1.789.

eBay Wins #69
This time around on eBay, I picked up 33 more penny cards. They are decidedly junk wax, with perhaps 1 exception.
There were 11 1988 Donruss cards. I'm in the camp that loves the Diamond Kings, so that Danny Tartabull is worth the price of the lot. And just for fun, here's Wally Joyner too.
This was the only former Cardinal in the lot, and the one of 20 1990 Donruss cards in the lot.
This was the only 1991 Donruss card, so I figured, what the heck, let's scan it.
Finally, inching out of the junk wax era, we have 1992 Stadium Club. Those full-bleed photos felt revolutionary at the time, but somewhere along the way Topps seems to have decided they need distinctive borders again.

Who loves junk wax?! I do, apparently. At least enough to bid on eBay auctions for "random" cards. I'm under no illusion that this is like buying a lottery ticket. I know full well there will be no "random" 89 Griffey, or 85 McGwire, or any other high-value card. However, as a collector starting in 1992 who didn't have the funds to buy a ton of stuff from previous years, these sets were once my missed opportunities. So there's at least a little nostalgia in these cards.
There were 15 1990 Donruss cards in the lot, but this was the only one that screamed out to be scanned. Something about Diamond Kings just seems premium in some way.
I'm going to give Al Nipper the win in this battle of the mustaches.
Those Texas T's used to be huge. Dave Stewart's the only guy I remember from these 4, unless Dave Clark happens to be guy from the Dave Clark Five.
In total, I picked up 21 more cards for 21 cents.

Pi Day 2013
Last year, I brought you Felix Pie - all 2 cards of his I owned at the time. And yes, I know the pronunciation is not the same as pi, but I'm a simple man, seeking out cheap laughs. This year, I hereby declare.
That's right, Pete Incaviglia. Did you know that - at least according to baseball reference's player listings - he's the only MLB player in history with the initials P.I.? I bet you didn't, nor did you care...nor do you care now. But here's ol' Pete anyway.
It was easy to choose the scans to use, because these are the only 5 Incaviglia cards I have, though I have multiple copies of the 1991 Donruss.
But wait, there's more.
I don't own this card, but it won me a few other cards in the 2011 Prime 9 redemption set, when I picked it out based on a small cropped piece.
Now, everyone go enjoy some pie.

eBay Wins #43
I've been scraping the bottom of the eBay barrel for penny cards again. This time, I get a former Cardinal, and the only River City Rascal with his number retired, Jack Clark.
I don't actually remember Jack as a Cardinal, but I remember his managerial stint with River City, and he still does the Cardinals games on Fox Sports. At least I think he does, I ditched cable a few years ago and now get to see about 6 games a year from home, just the ones Fox airs nationally.
