eBay Wins #231

Today I've got two more eBay penny cards, which are fairly ordinary, but caused me to learn a lesson.

1988 Topps Traded
#29T Pete Smith
#111T Kevin Coffman
How do I know these are 1988 Topps Traded and 1988 Topps Traded Tiffany cards? The fronts are whiter and the backs are brightly colored, just like the regular 1988 Topps Tiffany set. The rarity of Tiffany means I can be fairly sure these aren't those since I picked them up so cheaply, but the key to certainty is apparently found on the back.

Those two asterisks on the bottom left indicate a non-Tiffany card, at least according to a few collector-maintained sites and videos. I think it all checks out, but I'm sure I'll revisit this question every time I get a brightly colored 1988 card and check through the cards in my collection to make sure they're all sorted correctly.

August Card Show Autographs

I practically had to go to the August card show to get Bill Virdon's autograph, because in July, it was actually one dollar cheaper to buy a ticket good for the three I got plus Virdon. I couldn't let the ticket go to waste. Also appearing at this show were Dave LaPoint and Scott Cooper.

Scott Cooper
All-Star
"93-94"

At this show, specific inscriptions can be requested for an additional fee, which I assume is a normal thing you veteran autograph seekers are familiar with. I haven't purchased inscriptions, though I've heard several people talk about specifically what they wanted written on their items. As it turns out, I got an inscription from all 3 players, despite giving them no requests other than "on the sweet spot, please".

I did a little bargain basement shopping at the show, too, and I have no time to go through this stuff yet, so I'll just show you my haul here, in its unopened glory.

One seller had several tables full of $5 wax boxes. He probably had 30 each of 1991 and 1992 Donruss, along with several of the usual suspects, Fleer, Score, etc. I resisted the urge to load up, though, and restricted myself to a few boxes I don't see everywhere, 1992 Triple Play and 1988 Topps Big. I also picked up the 1988 Topps Traded set mostly on a whim, as I had exactly one card from it in my wantlist, the Todd Stottlemyre.

I'm all-in on autographed baseballs now. There's another show in September with 7 Cardinals attending, and I've already purchased some advanced tickets.

eBay Wins #2

Catching up on my eBay card wins should keep my blog busy for quite some time if I lack material.  Here is the oldest yet to be blogged:
1991 Upper Deck Brook Fordyce, Scott Aldred
1989 Donruss Rookies Ken Hill
1988 Topps Traded Tino Martinez
1991 Topps Traded Charles Johnson
1991 Topps Stadium Club Jim Mecir

1991 Bowman Roberto Hernandez, Todd Ritchie
1991 Fleer Ultra Juan Guzman
1991 Line Drive Rusty Meacham
1987 ProCards Roberto Hernandez
1990 ProCards Juan Guzman

12 cards for 16 cents.  Can't complain about that.  The listing was actually only for the first 10, but the  Hernandez and Guzman penny sleeves contained their minor league cards as well.  The big draw for me was Tino Martinez (a Cardinal from 2002-2003) and Ken Hill (1986-1991 and part of 1995).  So how do I make this post interesting?  Well, Ken Hill came to the Cardinals from Detroit along with the infamous "Player To Be Named Later".  That wound up being Mike Laga, who is the only man known to hit a ball out of Busch Memorial Stadium (the 1966-2005 version).  Recently, a local radio station tracked down the video, and I've been looking for an excuse to post it...but during the time I left this post in my drafts, the video went slightly viral (is it possible to go slightly viral?) and MLB ordered a takedown.

Oh yeah...it was a foul ball.  I promise you this video was real and amazing.  And now I know my Dad was telling the truth when he told me about it as a kid.
