I've been a little lax in posting lately, so I figured I'd take the opportunity for a quick and easy one to fill in the gap. Over at ARPSmith's Sportscard Obsession, which I feel like I've been reading for 10 years even though it's only been around for 8, there's a simple Price Is Right style contest. Guess the price of a lot consisting of 3 autograph cards, win a prize. I guess on the Price is Right you win the actual thing you were bidding on, but the idea holds. Oh, also it doesn't say closest without going over. Man, this analogy is falling apart. I need some sleep.

2018 College World Series Contest
It's College World Series time again, which means the annual contest at Autographed Cards is on. You've got until 11am Central Time tomorrow (Friday) to enter phase 1, which can give you a few extra points to help give you a head start for the main part of the contest. Right now, you'll just need to pick the 8 teams that will advance from each 8-team Super-Regional.
This is the 9th annual contest, and my 8th time participating. I said I was due for a win when I promoted the contest in 2016, but I actually managed to lock up a win in 2017 before the final game. I can't seem to find a post where I showed off my prizes, though, so I need to dig those out and get that done.
SLU is in the field for the first time since 2013, but as a #4 seed in their regional. I'm not sure they can pull off winning the title, but I do need them to at least beat Missouri State to avoid being razzed by a few of my friends who are alumni from there.

I'm back, and so is The Daily Dimwit
I'm not sure if anyone really noticed, but I took a little hiatus there. I've been busy, and my card collection hasn't been conveniently accessible to me for a little while, so I got a bit lazy once the football season ended. So lazy, in fact, that I didn't even start tracking NHL playoff probabilities. I'll pick those up for the Final I suppose.
Much more interesting is the return of the much more prolific blogger Sam of The Daily Dimwit. Not only is it interesting because you'll see cooler stuff on his blog, but because he's offering a contest to announce his return. It's just a little relic card...
...of one of the most historically significant players ever. It's a Jackie Robinson Game-Used bat just in case you can't read it. You've got to tweet or blog about the contest before next Wednesday to enter, so get to it!

I took a little break there, but I'm back and I've got to finish this prize package.
I've seen these disks before, but I still somehow thought that might have been a legitimately vintage card/disk. Also, how's this for timing: I got the Mike Leake card posted on the day he was sent off to Seattle. He played for the Cardinals for all of 2016 and, obviously, 2017 up to this point.
I've been a fan of Diamond Kings since the 80s, so it was a no-brainer to choose these cards in the draft. I especially enjoy the old photo of Thurman Munson. I also think his card also looks best because they didn't have to cover over nearly as many logos due to his backwards cap and chest protector.

Red Cardboard's Mostly Reds Cardboard Draft, Part 2
(Part 1)
Today's cards have a lot fewer Cardinals, but I did manage one per scan.
I really like Turkey Red, but I wasn't collecting when it first began, so I'm always trying to fill in gaps, and I found I actually owned no cards from the 2006 set. Also, the Cardinal I mentioned in this scan is Miguel Cairo, who was picked up by the team in August for both of his stints. Once was off waivers in 2001 and once was as a free agent after being released in 2007, so essentially the same situation. According to Baseball Reference, he's played every position except Pitcher, Catcher, and Center Field. This seems to be the first Miguel Cairo card I've ever posted.
It's tough to tell from the scan since I didn't leave any frame of reference, but these are indeed all minis. Felipe Lopez is the Cardinal here, another guy who played for the team twice, and was picked up the first time after being released. I've only got 2 cards from the base set of Bowman Heritage, and this is my first mini.

Red Cardboard's Mostly Reds Cardboard Draft, Part 1
A long, long time ago, Red Cardboard held a draft, and I received my cards, looked through them, and put them in my "to post" pile. I'm going to have to implement a queue rather than a pile, I think, or else some stuff's just going to never get posted.
As a Reds fan, most of the prizes offered were Reds, but I managed to find the former/future Cardinals in disguise, along with cards from a few sets I just like. Here are the first few cards from the results.
I envisioned this looking a bit more like a collage and a bit less like a poorly played round of Tetris, but what can I say? That Vada Pinson really threw off everyone else. It's got some markings on it, but it's my first card from 1970 Topps Super. Since I keep the bulk of my cards in standard sized boxes, I now even more urgently need to implement some sort of plan for oversized items, much like a library does.
Two other nice vintage cards are Keith Hernandez in his pre-mustache days, and a rough looking Dan Driessen. All 3 of the oldest cards features guys who made at least a stop with the Cardinals, along with Dmitri Young and Brett Tomko. For some reason I always think Joe Oliver was a Cardinal too, but he wasn't, and I can't figure out who I must be confusing him with.
There are plenty more, but as usual, the blogger label limit tells me when I've had enough for one day.

A Football Card in March, Why Not?
I recently won another contest from Sports Card Info, for an autographed football card.
As is usually the case with a 9-year-old card, the player shown is no longer in the league. Malcolm Kelly played just 21 games in two seasons in his career, after getting drafted in the 2nd round. But, according to Wikipedia, he recently joined the staff of the University of Houston football team, so maybe we'll see him back on the sidelines.

A Little Heritage Contest Win
Adam from Addiction as Therapy held his annual giveaway, and the prizes this year were packs of 2017 Heritage. This is my first look at this year's Heritage in person, so it was an interesting pack to open.
I've read lots of complaints that the 1968 design is bad, but I never looked at it that way. It's not something that would be a great original modern design, but I always thought it fit fine with the other 1960s sets.
I flipped through these looking at the fronts first, and so was excited to see a Yadier Molina. In my past Heritage purchases, there always seemed to be roughly one insert or short print per pack, so with no obvious inserts, I flipped the stack over to check for SPs, and found the Danny Salazar card. I saw a dealer collated set listed for $300 including all 100 SPs this past weekend, which seems crazy to me, but that's supply and demand for you I suppose.

He's Back!
I use Feedly to keep up with blogs, and when someone stops blogging, rather than remove them from my list entirely, I drop them into a "retired" section. That way it really gets my attention when something shows up there.
A few weeks ago, I saw a post show up from The Daily Dimwit, (with a pretty great Lou Gehrig Prime Cuts card) just in time for Spring Training to begin. He's back, at least one some level, and holding a contest to get everyone to get the word out, so go add The Daily Dimwit back to whatever you use to keep track of the blogs you read. You'll have to spread the word some more in a blog post for a chance at the prize, an autograph or relic from your team and some more miscellaneous cards for your collection.

More Contest Thanks
This time I'm showing some cards I won from All Cardinals All the Time, a blog that obviously caters to my interests. The contest to celebrate 2 years was a simple game guessing the serial number of one of two Alex Reyes cards, and I won with lucky #13.
The first part of the prize were these Bryant and Vlad cards. The autographed Reyes was a nice throw-in, if you can call an autograph of a team's #1 prospect a throw-in. We'll have to wait another year to see if he lives up to his hype, since he just completed Tommy John surgery after feeling some arm problems in the first days of spring training.
The rest of the prize was a Jumbo pack of 2017 Topps. Since I'm not terribly proactive when it comes to baseball cards, these are my first 2017s.
With 6 inserts and 30 base cards, one in-uniform and one former Cardinal seems like a pretty fair rate. Even though it pictures him in a Cubs jersey, I really like the Jon Lovitz first pitch card.
At first I thought that McGwire card was one of the 1987 style inserts, then I thought it was just kind of a throwaway advertising card after seeing the back, but upon looking at the checklist, it appears this is an actual insert set called Rediscover Topps.

Pull Tab Awareness Week Win Part 2
Here's the rest of my win for Pull Tab Awareness Week, 2016.
Part 1
The 2014 Donruss and Bowman Platinum cards are from sets I never bought, so those are great additions to my collection, but I think my favorite card in this bunch is the Jose Canseco. I remember watching Homer at the Bat as a kid. It actually first aired just a bit before I started watching baseball, so maybe my fond memories are all from reruns. Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire were my favorite non-Cardinals at that time, so I was happy to see Jose in the episode, along with Ozzie Smith. These aren't officially licensed cards, but customs made by defgav himself. The back mimics the 1991 Donruss set as well, but makes clear these are from the 2016 Baseball Card Breakdown set. The Aledmys Diaz card is also a custom, styled after the Hostess cards from 1975. It's so well done I actually didn't realize it was a custom and tried to find it in Zistle by its card number, before noticing it also carried the Baseball Card Breakdown name.

Pull Tab Awareness Week Win Part 1
I'm still digging through my pile of packages, unfortunately not in order, so here's one from July 2016 or so. You can read about the reason for the season at Baseball Card Breakdown, and I won a prize by spreading the word. Let's see what I've been letting languish on my desk.
Based on the other images I see online, Tom Urbani didn't quite sign that card where he was supposed to. All of the other signatures are in that big blank space at the bottom. Perhaps he's to blame for the scourge of sticker autographs.
The two Hollidays were both Archives cards I didn't have. Of all the years of Archives, I only had his 2012 card before. In fact, all of these were new to my collection, and I've now doubled my count of Enos Slaughter cards.
There's even better stuff in part 2 of this package. And don't worry, this one's only a two-parter.

A 2016 Bowman Draft Autograph from Sports Card Info
I won another contest at Sports Card Info, this time for an autograph from 2016 Bowman Draft. The contest ended on December 31, so that's the closest I've ever come to acquiring Bowman Draft cards in the year they were released.
Chrome never scans well, but this is a nice looking card in person. Taylor is the #5 to #7 prospect in the Reds system, depending on whose ranking you use. Just for comparison's sake, I looked up a ranking of the top Cardinals prospects, and I haven't heard of our #5-#7 guys either. But, Taylor was a first rounder in 2016, so he'll probably climb that list on his way to Cincinnati before too long.

College football will be here again before we know it IS HERE IS OVER, so I've got to get my prize from last season's Bowl Pick 'Em contest at Cards on Cards posted! My prize for a second place tie was a very generously sized box of cards, so I felt a bit overwhelmed even sorting through them. I finally sorted them out by player, and, as usual, I'll plan to post them all eventually, but I might quit halfway through, we'll see.

I must say thanks once more to Cards on Cards for the Bowl Pick 'Em Contest each year. In case you've lost track, this came from 2015-2016's contest, not the 2016-2017 one in which I totally took a freefall in the last 5-6 games. I've got a whole bunch of other cards that have been piling up to post while I pushed myself to get through these, so I'll be happy to start knocking those out soon.

There were actually two of the 1987 Fleer Stickers, so I decided to scan the back of one. There was only one 1988, but it looks pretty much like 1987 with a green background on the front. On the back you see Busch Stadium, which is now often called Busch Stadium II since the Cardinals are now in their third stadium by that name.
The Carter and Ripken cards were more packing material. Those are two pretty big stars to be throwaway cards, but there's a slight crease in them, and the sets are pretty common ones to begin with. Carter also played for Baltimore, so I might pass these two along to a friend of mine for his kid, so he can try to indoctrinate him into his Orioles fandom.

Do you ever just feel too lazy to turn a horizontal card sideways?
Since I didn't really collect from about 2000 until late 2010, a lot of the specialty sets from that time seem very obscure to me. I'd never heard of Upper Deck's "Diamond Pro Sigs", for example. It looks like the base cards have signatures printed on in foil. The only other card from the Playoff Honors set I have is an Albert Pujols, which was also in this prize package.

Since I didn't really collect from about 2000 until late 2010, a lot of the specialty sets from that time seem very obscure to me. I'd never heard of Upper Deck's "Diamond Pro Sigs", for example. It looks like the base cards have signatures printed on in foil. The only other card from the Playoff Honors set I have is an Albert Pujols, which was also in this prize package.

Bowl Pick 'Em Contest Winnings, Part XXXVII
College football will be here again before we know it IS HERE IS OVER, so I've got to get my prize from last season's Bowl Pick 'Em contest at Cards on Cards posted! My prize for a second place tie was a very generously sized box of cards, so I felt a bit overwhelmed even sorting through them. I finally sorted them out by player, and, as usual, I'll plan to post them all eventually, but I might quit halfway through, we'll see.

The giant prize pile is down to a large handful...
I always find it interesting to see what happpened with Cardinals draft picks I've never heard of.
Carl Dale was sent to Oakland as part of the deal acquire my cousin, Todd Stottlemyre, and eventually made it to MLB with Milwaukee in 1999 after rosters expanded. Yates Hall appears to have played his entire career in the Cardinals minor league system, and only played through 1998, when he was 25, but only rose to AA.
Brett Butler, I'm pretty sure, was another "packing material" card, protecting a stack by covering the end. But it's in good enough shape to throw into my 1991 Donruss box, along with the Ray Lankford. Also, I promise that hologram is of a 1990s Cardinals logo, though it's pretty hard to tell that from the scan.
