I don't have a whole lot from the early 80s, so two Cardinals, and eventual Cardinal Lee Smith were good to knock off my want list. I've got plenty of 90s cards, but a sparse amount of insert cards, which is where the Stottlemyre and Jefferies come in. The front side of Jefferies shows his 1B counterpart in the American League, Frank Thomas.

Bowl Pick 'Em Contest Winnings, Part III

College football will be here again before we know it, so I've got to get my prize from last season's Bowl Pick 'Em contest at Cards on Cards posted! My prize for a second place tie was a very generously sized box of cards, so I felt a bit overwhelmed even sorting through them. I finally sorted them out by player, and, as usual, I'll plan to post them all eventually, but I might quit halfway through, we'll see.

Those SSPC cards really stand out when sorting through a stack of cards. With no player name, team name, or even a card company logo, they're about as plain as can be on the front.

For some reason I seem to like manager cards disproportionately. Maybe it's just because I know the managers well, even when a team has few stars to speak of.  Sparky Anderson looks pretty old here, so it's hard to believe he managed another 13 years through 1995. However, he actually only turned 48 in 1982, if I did my math right, so he really wasn't all that old, as managers go, when he retired.

1982 Donruss #21 Ozzie Smith

An old Ozzie Diamond King for just 20 cents, I couldn't pass up that deal. I think I'm in somewhat of a minority in that I like cards of any player who has even been a Cardinal, even if that card doesn't picture them as a Cardinal. Although, I haven't exactly gone out of my way to find any Angels Pujols cards, so maybe there's a line drawn between the pre-Cardinal teams and the post-Cardinal teams.

It's kind of crazy that Donruss used the same Diamond King design in 1982 and 1983. I never knew that before just now.

It took me awhile to track down what set this one was from. The confusion came in that the back just says 1986 Sports Design Products, but there was a league-wide set that year by that name as well.

This card doesn't fit in a regular sleeve. Between these and Topps Big, I need to find some more accommodating supplies.
